Bryce Button, Director of Product Marketing at AJA, discusses AJA releases at the NAB Show, as well as the trends and technologies that are continuing to shape the future of the broadcast market.
Q What did you showcase during NAB 2019? What was the response?
A During NAB 2019, AJA showcased a range of new solutions and product updates that streamline how broadcast, production, post and AV professionals deliver dynamic and engaging content, with support for the latest formats and technologies, including HDR, 12G-SDI, Broadcast IP and beyond. Our new product launches and announcements were well-received with excitement from attendees, including the new Ki Pro GO multi-channel H.264 HD and SD recorder and player, which was honored by the broadcast community with multiple best of show awards. Additional new products we debuted included 14 openGear converter cards featuring DashBoard software support, two new IP video transmitters that bridge HDMI and 3G-SDI signals to SMPTE ST 2110 and the Corvid 44 12G I/O card for AJA Developers. We also introduced updates featuring improvements for the FS-HDR HDR/WCG Converter, Desktop and Mobile I/O products, AJA Control Room software, HDR Image Analyzer and HELO recorder/streamer. Throughout the show, we saw a consistent heavy flow of visitors on the AJA booth, and from our viewpoint, it was another successful year.
Brenda Klemme is the owner and CEO of K-Tek (www.ktekpro.com) a family-owned business, located in Southern California. Q Don’t I recognize you from “Slither”?
A Yes! I played Brenda Gutierrez in the James Gunn-written and-directed cult classic. My character grew up to the size of a barn and blew up, allowing my slither babies to take over the world. It was my final “good-bye” to acting after I’d spent many years in front of the camera. I reoccurred on “Stargate Atlantis”, an MTV show about a boy band called “2gether” as well as guesting on “Outer Limits,” “The Practice,” “The Dead Zone”, and worked on feature films and a ton of commercials in the ‘80s.

Q What motivating factor drives you to continue innovating year after year?
A Innovation is in our DNA. Customers demand it. With 4K becoming more pervasive and 8K on the horizon, the workstation of the future is going to require even more performance. However, performance does not mean that you need to sacrifice on cost. Today’s most demanding video workflows running high resolution, high framerate content typically utilize SAN-based storage architectures. By leveraging the power of NVMe all-flash storage media with 100GbE networking, our innovation will help organizations adopt a more cost-effective storage architecture by providing Fibre Channel-like latency in the cost envelope of a NAS infrastructure.

Q Finish the sentence: 2019 will be the production industry’s year of _____
A …accelerating content to cloud. We see production storage becoming more efficient and more agile by letting instantly available, highly protected cloud storage take on more and more roles in creative production workflows, leaving creatives to only manage two kinds of storage, fast, shared production storage for content creation, and cloud storage for the rest. By adopting this strategy creative teams get incredible flexibility and options while reducing the need to pay for, and manager, on-site storage sprawl. The result is teams can focus on their best creative work and deliver their work faster with less stress.

Q What motivating factor drives you to continue innovating year after year?
A We really enjoy working with people in the field, learning about their needs and working hard at coming up with solutions. Seeing what a team of people can accomplish when they have the same goal can be very rewarding.

Q What new products/services has your company introduced since last years' NAB?
A We recently unveiled our smallest microphone to date, the 6000 Series subminiature microphone, which is just 3mm in size. The series is comprised of three solutions, a lavalier version with two different sensitivities – the 6060 (max 134dB SPL) and 6061 (max 144dB SPL) – and also a headset version called the 6066. All options come in black or beige and are IP58-rated as waterproof and dustproof for durability.

Q What motivating factor drives you to continue innovating year after year?
A Actually, talking to our users at tradeshows. Hearing about how the software we've created has improved someone's life, making their work smoother and more enjoyable, and enabling them to realize their creative vision more fully, is endlessly motivating and inspiring.

Q What motivating factor drives you to continue innovating year after year?
A We continually look at how our products can adapt to the constantly changing RF landscape worldwide and a growing need for wireless communications. We regularly update and expand the system so that CrewCom will continue to meet the demands of any live production today and into the future.
Riding off of the success of the Master 65, a heavy-duty fluid head designed for Studio and Outside Broadcast (OB) from last year's NAB, President, and CEO of Cartoni, Elisabetta Cartoni, is looking ahead to the release of the new steering P70 pedestal and more.
Q What motivating factor drives you to continue innovating year after year?
A In Italy, we say “If you stop, you are out!” The industry is changing so rapidly; we have to keep pace and be the perfect accessory for the new generation of cameras. We try to be tuned into the industry, whether its new cameras that are being launched or new trends. We stay abreast of current innovation and never take for granted the standard technologies. At the same time, we are seeing an increase in competition from the Asian markets who are challenging the leaders in camera support. Their technology is poor replicas of brands such as Sachtler, Vinten or Cartoni. To help offset this, we are constantly designing new features for the customer, and giving them new reasons to choose Cartoni, such as our best-in-class five-year warranty on most products. If you don’t keep improving, you are bound to decline.
