An interview from the 2019 National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas with Brenda Klemme of K-Tek. Since its’ founding in 1996 by Manfred N Klemme, K-Tek has been supporting the audio world with innovative tools to make the job of the sound engineer and boom operator just a bit smoother. With a passion for audio, Manfred’s first mission was to design and manufacture a line of U.S. made boom poles that were both lightweight yet super strong and so audio friendly that folks took notice. Mission accomplished. In 1999 K-Tek won a Technical Achievement Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the Klassic Boom Pole. Since then, K-Tek has earned a slew of other awards and the reputation of making an array of elegantly designed and beautifully constructed, audio-centric products. In this interview Brenda talks with us about the new Stingray Audio Backpack & the Stingray Utility Hip Pack.
The K-Tek Stingray Backpack is a first-of-its-kind backpack that’s specially designed to help sound recordists carry their fully loaded mixer when traveling to rugged locations. The new Stingray Backpack LE (KSBP1) makes it fast to pack and unpack a comprehensive gear package and features such gems as multiple storage pockets, a hidden laptop compartment and a built-in stealth rain cover. It is fully adjustable and customizable, featuring ample MOLLE attachment points for additional gear. A strong and lightweight internal frame structure makes the versatile Backpack durable, substantial and protective.
Well-padded, the Stingray Backpack gives users the freedom to go where dollies and carts cannot—or are too complicated to use. It simplifies packing, and makes it more convenient and comfortable to travel by bus, rail or plane, as well as hiking to difficult destinations. A pre-packed mixer/recorder bag slides into the unique docking port, nesting there until called upon to record within seconds.
When using phone or tablet-based wireless control interfaces, the mixer bag can simply stay in the backpack as is; allowing for convenient, fast and stealth recording for the sound mixer. Hidden inside the waterproof bottom, the stealth rain cover can quickly be wrapped around the exterior to protect all the gear from rain and view.
Optional accessories for the backpack include the Stingray Boom Cup Holder (KSBCH1) and a set of two Stingray Tension Straps (KSTS1) that allow miscellaneous additional cargo like the Stingray Harness be added to the large MOLLE area on the rear of the backpack.
The Stingray Backpack LE is compatible with K-Tek Mixer Bags including Stingray Small (KSTGS), Medium (KSTGM), Large (KSTGL), and Junior (KSTGJ). Additionally two extra pockets each can store a Small Gizmo Bag (KGBS1), as well as a battery or windscreen.
At NAB, K-Tek also introduced the industry’s first hip pack designed by and for Sound Utility and Boom Operators. The Stingray Utility Hip Pack provides 2 spacious compartments, one with a built-in organizer, and offers places to hold equipment, accessories, tools, a mobile phone and what ever is needed to be close at hand and easy to find.
Comfortable to handle, with a unique soft corner curved design, this versatile carrier is equally useful on-set and off. Its adjustable wide fabric waistband and padded exterior lets it be worn in a number of ways: holster style with the stay-in-place resizable and removable thigh-strap, as a fanny-pack, or even cross shoulder.
Two sections offer wrap-around zippers for easy access. The main compartment measures 10” x 10” x 3”/ 25cm x 25 cm x 8 cm while the front compartment is an ample 7”x8.5”/18 cm x 35 cm. Each features soft orange lining with smartly detailed advantages like velour and mesh pockets, a view-through vinyl-backed mesh section, and elasticized fabric pouches. From the easy-grab zipper tabs to the elastic tool organizer, it is built to go to work.
An everyday piece of work-wear, the black KSUHP1 is large enough to fit a Sound Devices MixPro-3 or MixPre-6 for stealth recording. Small elastic pouches within are sized to fit Stingray KSLP1 Lav pouches, and a host of handy goods like cables, adapters, tape, pens, and cleaning kits. The sound department is just the start: the Utility Hip Pack can facilitate various roles in other on-set departments like lighting, grip, camera, make-up, still photography and script.
The Stingray Utility Hip Pack weighs just 14 ounces/390 grams and is available online or from K-Tek dealers.
