Much of the video content available to the world is made and edited by small studios. These facilities generally have 1-10 professionals working on video projects. They may do complete video capture and production or be contracted to do piece work by larger organizations. These video professionals have needs that are similar to, as well as different from, larger production companies1. For instance, they may use cloud-based resources for non-local collaborative work or sharing proxies while they use network storage for local collaborative work. However, there is one characteristic that makes many of these smaller facilities unique, and that is their widespread use of small(er) Direct Attached Storage (DAS) devices.
NAB Show Las Vegas is a great place to see all of the latest and greatest production gear. and there is a LOT to see. New cameras, switchers, lighting and other new products were around every corner. Add in monitors, editing and all the other products too. What’s not to like? Let’s take a look at some of the things that I saw on the show floor.
Before we completely settle after the whirlwind of NAB, I wanted to share a few reflections on this year’s show. It’s always interesting to hear the topics that bubble to the surface in different conversations. This year, there were three themes that really stood out.
With over 1600 exhibitors, crunching the ProductionHUB Awards of Excellence list down to just 12 outstanding winners and five special mentions was not an easy task. Getting things right never is, is it? It was incredibly hard to put this list in order. It was fun, but still a difficult task. The nomination panel had lots of “animated” discussions, but we made it happen. The best part of this list is that every product and manufacturer earns the right to be here on merit. No freebies, shoe-ins or arm twisting. You can't buy your way on the list either. Our selections are honest and fair. We present our 2019 Award of Excellence winners, in alphabetical order.

These iconic brands return to their roots as the premiere production directories where anyone can find exactly what they need.

Yet rapidly cycling standards have reduced the life expectancy of LTO tapes, the predominant format for digital archiving, to just 7 years. According to the article, some archives are actually printing digital movies to physical film stock, because it lasts up to 100 years and is less expensive to maintain.
