An interview from the 2017 NAB NY Show in New York City with Keith Lissak of Quantum. Quantum is a leading expert in scale-out tiered storage, archive and data protection. The company’s StorNext platform powers modern high-performance workflows, enabling seamless, real-time collaboration and keeping content readily accessible for future use and re-monetization. More than 100,000 customers have trusted Quantum to address their most demanding content workflow needs, including top studios, major broadcasters and cutting-edge content creators. In this interview we talk with Keith about Quantum’s StorNext 6 Platform & Xcellis Foundation.

StorNext 6, a major new release of its award-winning StorNext® platform, adding new advanced data management features to the industry-leading 4K performance of the company’s workflow storage solutions portfolio. With this unique combination of performance and automatic, policy-driven management, StorNext 6 is engineered to overcome the challenges of ever-growing, higher-resolution content and capitalize on the opportunities to re-monetize or re-purpose that content. StorNext 6 features include more efficient and cost-effective ways to meet project performance demands, share and access content across geographically distributed teams, and manage and protect archived content. Quantum delivers all these benefits in an integrated, multi-tier storage solution encompassing flash, spinning disk, object storage, tape and the cloud while maintaining optimized performance, visibility and access at every tier.

StorNext is uniquely designed to scale smoothly from HD-level systems to 4K and beyond. StorNext users enjoy cost-effective scalability, optimized performance, and shared access through an efficient storage-only, scale-out model. Leveraging its extensive real-world 4K testing and a series of 4K reference architectures developed from test data, Quantum’s StorNext platform provides scalable storage that delivers high performance using less hardware than competing systems. With StorNext 6, Quantum delivers a new quality of service (QoS) feature that empowers facilities to further tune and optimize performance across all client workstations, and on a machine-by-machine basis, in a shared storage environment.

Xcellis Foundation, a high-performance, entry-level workflow storage system specifically designed to address the technical and budgetary requirements of small- to medium-sized postproduction facilities and corporate video departments. Based on Quantum’s industry-leading StorNext shared file system and data management platform, the new system delivers the benefits of enterprise-class Xcellis storage, including high performance and scalability, in a NAS appliance for under $25,000. By providing a more feature-rich alternative to other entry-level storage systems at a similar price point, Xcellis Foundation is ideal for smaller video production facilities that need the benefits of a shared workflow but have limited budgets to spend on shared storage.

The 3U Xcellis Foundation system includes Quantum’s QXS disk storage chassis and Workflow Director appliance, which provides NAS connectivity and support for billions of files across up to 64 virtual file systems. Xcellis Foundation comes standard with 48 TB of raw capacity, and users can upgrade to 72 TB or 96 TB. When the time comes to scale the system, adding performance and capacity can be done easily, cost-effectively by simply connecting more storage. Connectivity is via dual 10 GbE or optional 40 GbE, and NAS protocol support is included with no per-seat licensing.
